What the designer draws

Drawn by the designer, not photographs. Each one opens in the designer.

Why drawings, not photographs

Every picture above is produced by the designer on this site from a real configuration and priced by the same estimator. None is a photograph, and none is a deck we have built: they show what the designer can handle, which is the thing you can check.

A photograph of somebody else's deck shows their yard, their house height and their fence. You cannot get a price out of it. A drawing you made yourself has your width, your depth, your height off the ground and your steps in it, with a number and the parts it is made of. Print it, hand it to three builders, and get three comparable answers.

When we have finished decks of our own to photograph, they will appear here with the date, the neighbourhood and the homeowner's permission, and the caption will say which is a photograph and which is a drawing.

What the drawings do not show

  • Your fence, your trees, your neighbour's garage, and what the deck does to your light.
  • The slope of your yard. Every drawing here assumes flat ground.
  • The ground itself: rock, clay, a soft spot, or a buried line where a post wants to go.
  • The wall the deck attaches to, which is the part that decides how a deck ages.
  • Furniture, people and a barbecue, all of which make a deck look bigger in a photograph than it is.
